Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has ‘good news’ to share at his latest press conference

Daniel Farke told Thursday’s press conference – as per Leeds United’s YouTube channel – that Joe Gelhardt did not need surgery on a hand injury picked up in training, but will miss Saturday’s match.

Gelhardt, 21, suffered a hand fracture in training last week and had been sent for further assessment to determine if he would require surgery to fix the issue. He has not been a part of the last three games.

The young striker, nicknamed Joffy, has struggled for game time this season with Georginio Rutter and Joel Piroe both impressing. Patrick Bamford is fit again, and Mateo Joseph is also an option for Leeds.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s home clash against Plymouth, Farke gave an update on the ex-Wigan ace. He says that it is good news, that Gelhardt will not need surgery – but he is not available on Saturday.

“Joe Gelhardt overall good news, he didn’t need surgery, he will definitely miss this game,” Farke said on Thursday in his latest press conference, which was broadcasted on Leeds United’s YouTube channel.

Gelhardt needs to go on loan in January. So, it is good news that he will not need to go under the knife in order to allow the injury to correct itself. For Leeds, not having Gelhardt does not really affect the team.

But for the player himself, he needs to be fit ahead of the January window in order to go and get himself a loan move away from Leeds – and find himself a Championship club where he can go and score goals.

It would be Gelhardt’s second loan away from Leeds, spending the second half of last season on loan at Sunderland – where he scored three goals in 20 games. A similar loan, but more goals, is required.
