Danny Mills has told TalkSPORT that players would jump at the chance to join Leeds United this summer if Steven Gerrard is appointed as manager – suggesting that the Anfield icon would be a good appointment at Elland Road.
Gerrard, 43, remains without a job since his sacking at Aston Villa during the first half of the 2022-23 campaign. He has since been linked with a number of jobs, previously linked with us after the sacking of Jesse Marsch in February.
A report from Football Transfers claims that Leeds have held talks with Gerrard, while Phil Hay writes in today’s piece with The Athletic – that those close to Gerrard feel he has a strong chance of winning the race for the job.
Ex-Leeds defender Mills – who like Gerrard among the Leeds fans, often divides opinion – says Gerrard would be a good choice if Leeds can get him in. He says that if you are a transfer target, Gerrard at Leeds would be tempting.

“I think he’s a good, young manager with a point to prove. He’s got passion, he’s got drive, he’s got desire. He can attract players and he’s shown, certainly at Rangers, that he will give young players a chance,” Mills told TalkSPORT.
“Who else are Leeds looking at? He made bold decisions [at Villa] and unfortunately, his new signings got injured in the first few weeks of the season. You’ve got to go players not part of my plans and say, ‘ah, now I need you’.
“He’ll have learnt from that and manage it better. I still think he will be a very good manager. He can dip into all the contacts he has. If you’re a player and Gerrard comes knocking, what’s not to like about that?” Mills continued.
Mills: Players would jump at chance to joins Leeds if Gerrard is manager
Not wrong. Gerrard is one of the biggest names in the game. Look at Burnley last summer. They appointed Vincent Kompany. A commanding, Premier League legend. In terms of management, he struggled to shine at Anderlecht.
They took a chance and his leader-like aura was a big factor in not only guiding Burnley back into the top tier at the first attempt – but the lure of Kompany helped attract a number of big players. Leeds should look to do the same.
