Some close to Steven Gerrard believe that he now has a good chance of becoming the next manager of Leeds United.

That is according to Phil Hay and The Athletic, who notes that Leeds are considering the likes of Scott Parker and Carlos Corberan; while they would jump at the chance to appoint Brendan Rodgers.

Leeds are continuing their preparations for the new Championship season. And while there is speculation over the ownership going on in the background, Angus Kinnear appears to be working on replacing Sam Allardyce.

Some close to Gerrard think he could get Leeds job

And one of the names in contention is Steven Gerrard. Reports from Football Transfers this week claimed that Gerrard is speaking with Leeds and Leicester City about their respective positions.

The Athletic is now suggesting that some close to Gerrard think that he is in with a good chance of getting the Leeds gig. Obviously, he would be joined by Gary McAllister if he got the job.

Gerrard is not a particularly exciting name for Leeds fans. He has had success in his managerial career already, winning the league title with Rangers.

He also led the Gers to some really impressive results on the European stage. And he did not do a terrible job with Aston Villa for the majority of his tenure.

He is someone who can make an impact. And Leeds – right now – have a squad that should be able to compete for promotion. Obviously, much will change by the time the season starts.

The problem with Gerrard, for many, is more about what will happen if promotion is secured. He is yet to prove himself as any kind of innovator in the Premier League. Certainly, some fans believe – rightly or wrongly – Michael Beale had a lot to do with the success he has enjoyed so far.

So it would be a fine appointment if Leeds did turn to Gerrard. And the atmosphere on the opening day of next season will be exceptional nonetheless.

But if Leeds are looking to capture the imagination with their next appointment, turning to Gerrard probably will not do it.
