Daniel Farke’s record against Derby County is worrying as Leeds United prepare to reignite rivalry at Elland Road

It has been four years since Leeds United and Derby County did battle, with the two sides becoming modern-day rivals following the Spygate scandal and 2019 play-off semi-finals.

Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League in 2020 and Derby’s relegation to League One in 2022 means the two clubs have not been in the same league since 2019-20 but this season, they reunite.

Indeed, Leeds host Derby on Saturday before the reverse fixture takes place at Pride Park later this month on December 29. The two sides remain rivals, after Spygate in January 2019 and then the play-offs.

David Prutton says there will be no love lost between Leeds and Derby ahead of Saturday, with the former Leeds midfielder predicting a 2-1 home win. But, Daniel Farke’s record against Derby is particularly poor.

Daniel Farke’s record against Derby County is poor after six games

Given this is the first meeting in four years between the two sides, Farke is yet to manage Leeds against Derby but as Norwich manager, the German faced Derby on six occasions between 2017 and 2021.

Just one win came in those six matches despite being promoted twice with Norwich during his four years as manager. Farke suffered three defeats against Derby, drawing two at a rate of just 0.83 points a game.

Interestingly, since Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at Leeds, the Whites faced Derby six times under the Argentine. He won four times and drew once, but that one defeat came in the form of a play-off semi-final defeat.

Leeds though, will be confident given their form at Elland Road this season and that Derby are only a newly-promoted Championship side. They have a secret weapon in on-loan midfielder Joe Rothwell, too.

Rothwell has faced Derby seven times in his career, winning six times and having a hand in three goals from the middle of the park. Perhaps, this is where Rothwell opens his Leeds account come Saturday.
