Daniel Farke shares what really ‘annoyed’ him about Leeds United’s defeat to Stoke City

Daniel Farke has told his post-match press conference – as per Leeds Live – that Leeds United letting Stoke City score from a corner really “annoyed” him on Wednesday night, as Leeds suffered a 1-0 loss.

A dismal night for Leeds as our good run of form came to an end at the hand of Alex Neil’s side at the Bet365 Stadium. Farke made three changes to the side that came from behind to beat Norwich, 3-2.

Cree Summerville was the shock omission – while Glen Kamara and Dan James were also taken out of the starting line-up. Ilia Gruev got his first start, while Willy Gnonto and Jaidon Anthony also started.

A dire game of half-chances sprung to life when sub Patrick Bamford won a penalty, but then skied the resulting spot-kick. Five minutes later, Stoke scored from a corner, Pascal Struijk scoring an own goal.

Not much the Leeds captain could really do about it, though. Wesley’s header hit the bar, ricocheting instantly off of Struijk who could do nothing but get in the way of the rebound. It left Farke, annoyed.

“Very,” Farke said as per Leeds Live, when asked if he was annoyed with Leeds conceding from a set-piece. “Because we defended so well and did not allow many chances. Set-pieces are important.

“Normally start well with these. My teams are normally good at set-pieces. I was annoyed. Missed penalty allowed us to be disappointed of being proactive to the ball and have it in a different way.”

Plenty of blame will be attributed to Bamford for the defeat. His miss from the spot turned the game, instantly giving the home side energy, the home crowd delighted. But there were many other issues.

Farke’s changes should hold some blame, too. Gruev and Anthony were particularly poor, failing to justify their surprise starts. Defensively, Leeds were solid – but undone by a corner, which was poor.

Plenty to learn from and if anything Leeds take away from the loss other than it being difficult to play against Stoke on a cold, wet Wednesday night, is that Bamford cannot be allowed to take penalties.
