Daniel Farke says ‘top-class’ Leeds player made ‘mistakes’, but he should be proud

Daniel Farke told his post-match press conference – as per Leeds Live – that Leeds United teenager Archie Gray should be proud of his first professional outing even if he made some “mistakes” during the 2-2 draw with Cardiff.

Gray, 17, was thrown into the starting line-up alongside Ethan Ampadu in the middle of the park. The youngster was preferred to the likes of Darko Gyabi, Jamie Shackleton and Lew Bate. Cardiff were 2-0 to the good at half-time.

Liam Cooper and Crysencio Summerville got the goals to draw level, the second coming moments after Gray had been taken off – replaced by Sonny Perkins on 93 minutes. A performance full of endeavour, aggression and skill.

The youngster produced a lovely couple of runs from midfield, some impressive long-range passing and crossing and generally made things happen – while Ampadu kept things simple and assured. Farke gave his verdict on Gray.

“If you promise me you won’t tell Archie, I tell you he was outstanding. Such a mature performance. Not perfect, slight mistakes in positioning, but for such a young lad it was top-class. He can be proud of this tonight,” Farke said.

He was excellent. Gray was everywhere and had you had no knowledge of Leeds beforehand, you will have been stunned to find out he is only 17. Physical, robust, aggressive and tenacious – but technical, quick and skillful.

Gray has a bit of everything. Perhaps, a bit of each of his family members that have played for Leeds. Father Andy, Grandfather Frank or Great Uncle Eddie. This kid is going on to huge things – long may it be at Elland Road.
