Daniel Farke says Leeds United have a teenager that can save The 49ers a lot of money in the future

It is not all concern and angst at Leeds United following Sunday’s defeat to Portsmouth, with news emerging on Monday that will have delighted those of a Leeds persuasion.

Leeds‘ 1-0 loss to Portsmouth has concerned supporters that Daniel Farke’s side are going to implode once again. The Whites could have scored three or four on Sunday, but ended up losing the match.

With Sheffield United and Burnley winning, Leeds are now level on points with Sheffield United. The two promotion rivals play on Tuesday night and by the time Leeds face Millwall, they could be in third place.

Joey Barton thinks Portsmouth’s win has blown the promotion race wide open, while Gary Lineker has reminded Leeds that third place often miss out on promotion. But, there is some “perfect news” for fans.

Daniel Farke excited by Sam Chambers as he signs new Leeds deal

On his 18th birthday, Sam Chambers was confirmed as signing a new long-term deal at Leeds. That is no coincidence, with Leeds only able to offer the attacker a lengthy contract when he finally turned 18.

Chambers made his debut against Plymouth at Elland Road earlier in the season alongside Charlie Crew and Josuha Guilavogui, before starting against Millwall in The FA Cup. He has signed a deal until 2028.

Farke said Chambers can play a role and possibly, lessen the need for The 49ers to spend money on new signings: “Perfect day for Sam, also his birthday. I like him a lot, I believe in him, he’s developed so much.

“No coincidence he got his first start against Millwall and also, first appearance at Championship level, several times in the squad. The new contract is not a gift, we believe he can play a role for us in the future.

“It is a cornerstone of our philosophy that we want to develop our own players. We can’t always spend lots of money and buy players, we want to develop players. Perfect news for him, perfect news for us.”

What next for Sam Chambers as Leeds close in on promotion

With Premier League football on the horizon for Leeds United, Chambers is unlikely to get much of a chance while Leeds are in the top tier. New signings will be made, including Manor Solomon perhaps.

So, Chambers will have a decision to make. He has the taste of first-team football already having made his debut this season and won his first start – so this summer, with a deal until 2028, he needs to go on loan.

Perhaps, a League One club or maybe even a low-end Championship side will consider bringing the Scotland U19 international on board for the 2025-26 season. But he needs first-team football, now.
