The signing of Djed Spence was expected to see Luke Ayling relegated to the bench but the Tottenham loanee has picked up an injury and Ayling has retained his place – and Daniel Farke has applauded him.
Ayling, 32, has started every league game for Leeds this season – scoring against West Brom and still proving he is a key player for Leeds. Even if his defensive frailty has grown, he is still a very key player.
Since joining in 2016, Ayling has played an enormous 260 games for the club. This season, he will go very close to breaking the 300 barrier and there is no doubt that he is a modern-day Leeds legend.
Farke was asked about Ayling in Friday’s press conference – as per the club’s YouTube – ahead of our clash against Watford on Saturday. He underlined how important Ayling is to the club at the moment.
“Luke’s influence on this group is massive. You can’t overrate it, because he’s so so important. A good player, but his ability to lead in the dressing room to make sure everyone is sharp, aware,” Farke said.
“He talks a lot in the dressing room. He gives confidence, an arm round the shoulder but also a kick to get started. We need him. He is on it, every game. He’s on fire, brings this mentality. I love his emotions.”

Ayling has been excellent and having that older head in the dressing room, with Liam Cooper, Stuart Dallas and Patrick Bamford all injured during the first couple of months – has been incredibly important.
It is known how important he is behind the scenes and with Leeds boasting a very young side, especially in attack and midfield, Ayling is pivotal. Bamford, Dallas and Cooper are returning and that will help him.
