Daniel Farke claims 26-year-old Leeds player definitely won’t be leaving in January

Tottenham lost both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven during a loss to Chelsea – and there have been murmurs of a recall for Joe Rodon, but Daniel Farke rubbished those suggestions today.

Rodon, 26, has starred for Leeds since joining the club on loan from Spurs in the summer. A move that surfaced largely given Leeds boast two Wales teammates, in the form of Ethan Ampadu and Dan James.

But also, with Gretar Steinsson in the transfer department – after he worked under Fabio Paratici at the North London club. Rodon joined Leeds on a season-long loan, after a season with French side Rennes.

Spurs were beaten 4-1 as Romero picked up a three-match ban after a straight red. Van de Ven pulled up with a hamstring injury and could be out for a number of weeks. It highlighted Spurs’ lack of cover.

Eric Dier came on, but Spurs lack any other recognised, senior centre-backs. Farke was asked if there was any chance Rodon could return to Spurs in January. Farke spoke in Thursday’s press conference.

“Joe will stay. He is an important player for my plans. It is important we have stability and no uncertainty, so he will stay with us. I am pleased with his development but he has to keep going. Brilliant so far.”

Rodon has been superb and if Spurs are lacking in central defence come January, you would imagine they may consider looking at bringing in a new centre-back. But surely, Spurs will want to sign one.

Rather, than bring Rodon back to fill a hole, only until the summer when they go and sign a new one anyway. It would mess Rodon around. Leaving Rodon at Leeds heightens a permanent move, as well.

So, it is in Spurs’ best interests to keep Rodon at Leeds and sign cover from elsewhere. Of course, nothing can be predicted at this stage – but until the January deadline, there will be a degree of worry.
