Daniel Farke has told Friday’s press conference – as per the club’s YouTube channel – that there is a chance Leeds United could still sign a left-back, but praised the current options he has in that position.
With Junior Firpo and Sam Byram injured, Leeds are lacking in options – and quality – on the left side of the defence. Leeds have lacked a long-term solution, with Firpo struggling to really make a good impact.
On Saturday, Leeds take on Sheffield Wednesday and our lack of options in that role will be evident. The chances are that Leo Hjelde or Jamie Shackleton could play – with duo Byram and Firpo still sidelined.
Farke was asked if the club will sign a new left-sided defender before the close of play on Friday. He responded by saying that he will not go to sleep until the deadline – but is happy with his options.
“We will stay awake to the final second of the window. Overall, a manager always wants more options and more quality. If I could sign Roberto Carlos is in his prime, I would – but he is doing something else.
“We have Junior Firpo, Sam Byram – who has been outstanding. I hope both will be back after the int. break. Shackleton has played fantastic in this role. We have options, Pascal Struijk, too,” Farke said.
Farke hints at possible signing but praises left-back options
Farke is right, Leeds do have options on the left. He mentioned how good Jamie Shackleton has been and he is right, the versatile star has come back and performed above what might have been expected.
Firpo and Byram are two solid options and while they are out injured, they are easily good enough at this level. Struijk can play there, but it is not ideal – he is impressing in the middle. Hjelde remains an option.
So, if Leeds sign a left-back, then great. But Farke will know that if he does bring in a new left-back, then it blocks the path into the side for the current options. If one is available, then great – get him in.
