Ilia Gruev has been afforded only a handful of minutes since joining Leeds United, playing more for his country since arriving at Elland Road – and Daniel Farke has explained why he has not been used much.

Gruev, 23, was one of nine summer signings made by Leeds – along with Karl Darlow, Djed Spence, Joe Rodon, Sam Byram, Ethan Ampadu, Glen Kamara, Joel Piroe and Jaidon Anthony. He cost us £4m.

But the Bulgaria ace, who started both of his nation’s games in the September break, has returned and is struggling to get game time. Late sub outings against Millwall and Watford. Unused against Hull City.

Gruev’s name arose in Thursday’s press conference – as per the club’s YouTube channel – and Farke explained why Gruev is not playing. He says it is going to take time for him to adapt to English football.

“For each and every player, it is something different when you come to the motherland of football because our approach and physicality is second to none. It is always new for players who come over.

“It is normal that he needs a bit of time, and in language – he is fluent, which is impressive, but in terms of football phrases, it lasts a while. He’s a top player, I am pleased with him. A regular for Bulgaria.

“Plenty of games in the Bundesliga. Archie Gray, Ethan Ampadu and Glen Kamara, all impressive. We do not have to throw him into the mix, I much prefer this. If I need him, he is ready. A top-class guy.”

Farke explains why Gruev has not been used by Leeds so far

There is no doubting that Gruev is a top, top midfielder. A player that is easily good enough to play in the top tier of German football – and possibly, Premier League standard. But time is needed for him to adapt.

It is likely that Gruev has been brought in as cover for Ampadu. But with the Wales ace arguably our best player this season, Ampadu will not be dropped – or rested – any time soon. One to keep an eye on.
