Daniel Farke has told Friday’s press conference – as per Leeds United’s YouTube – that Jaidon Anthony was in line to take a penalty on Wednesday night if Joel Piroe could not, but he was also substituted.
Anthony, 23, was handed only his second start for Leeds on Wednesday during our 1-0 defeat to Stoke City. He struggled, failing to really get involved. His only spark, a little nutmeg and a shot that was wide.
He was subbed along with Piroe just before 70 minutes, replaced by Cree Summerville, Dan James and Patrick Bamford – with Piroe and Willy Gnonto also making way. Piroe was in line to take any penalties.
He was Farke’s choice and had been told that, before the game. As the game transpired, Bamford took the penalty and missed having won it himself. Afterwards, Stoke scored and the Potters went on to win.
Speaking about the penalty miss in Friday’s press conference at Stoke, Farke said that while Piroe was on penalties – if the Dutchman could not take it, Anthony was next in line, saying he has a good record.
“Piroe our main taker, then you have other options with some players having good, bad days. Another was Anthony and has a good record, but was subbed. Don’t think subs should come on and take them.”

Anthony has scored for Leeds but he seems perhaps, slightly erratic. Maybe a confidence thing, but the winger does not seem the kind of assured player required from the penalty spot. Not just yet, anyway.
However, it feels like any of Leeds’ attackers on Wednesday night would have done a better job than the man that did take the penalty, Bamford. His effort not only cost Leeds a point, but all three in the end.
