Back in 2020, Daniel Farke wanted to sign Amin Younes at Norwich to bolster his side’s push for Premier League survival – and now, the German playmaker is a free agent and Leeds United should reignite Farke’s previous interest.
Eight-time Germany star Younes, 29, returned to Napoli in January 2020 after an 18-month loan spell at Frankfurt. It comes after breaking into senior football with Gladbach, the club Farke has just left before moving to Elland Road.
A loan at Kaiserslauten earned him a move from Gladbach to Ajax, where he has enjoyed his best form. Playing 100 times for the Dutch giants, Younes had a hand in 42 goals – scoring 17, 25 assists. If Ajax was good, Napoli was bad.
Joining from Ajax in 2018, he was on the books at Napoli for three and a half years – playing 28 times. Within which, came his spell at Frankfurt. He moved to Steven Gerrard’s side Al-Ettifaq in January 2022, before a loan to Utrecht.
Now, he is a free agent. Just 11 games came last season at Utrecht due to injury, and his Ettifaq contract has ended. So, a pocket-sized no.10 with enormous creativity, goals and ability from set-pieces. Clearly, Farke is an admirer.
Farke wanted Younes at Norwich in 2020: Leeds should sign free agent
According to ArenaNapoli in January 2020, Farke wanted him at Norwich from Napoli. It did not materialise, but it is clear Younes is a player Farke likes. Right now at Leeds, a no.10 is needed after Brenden Aaronson left for Germany.
Younes needs a new home, on a free. He is still young at 29 and Farke is not adverse to bringing in an injury prone 29-year-old, currently a free agent -ask Sam Byram. Leaving Gerrard’s side, Leeds and Farke should snap him up.
Yes, his career has tailed off but he is young enough to rediscover it and under Farke, he could. The Championship would give him the ideal platform to do so, a step down but still big enough to peak his interest. Could be perfect.
