In a frustrating encounter at Elland Road, Leeds United were narrowly defeated by Sunderland, with Habib Diarra’s second-half penalty the decider. Daniel Farke and Regis Le Bris reacted.

The decisive moment came after Ethan Ampadu was penalised for a handball, a decision that saw referee Stuart Attwell consult the pitch-side monitor before pointing to the spot.

Diarra’s penalty found its way into the net, leaving Leeds empty-handed. Karl Darlow did his utmost to keep the ball out of the net, but one-time Leeds target Diarra did just enough to find the back of the net.

The result was a bitter pill to swallow for Leeds, who had dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout the match. “We were so dominant, we had so much possession,” Daniel Farke said.

“But we knew we would face a very compact, competent Sunderland,” he continued. Despite having 18 shots to Sunderland’s three, Leeds were unable to break through the visitors’ resilient defence.

This defeat has significant implications for Leeds’ position. The loss leaves them six points above the relegation zone, with relegation rivals West Ham and Nottingham Forest still to play their matches.

Daniel Farke and Regis Le Bris shocked by Sunderland win

Leeds’ inability to convert chances into goals was evident throughout the match. Despite their dominance with shots and possession, they failed to truly test Sunderland’s debutant goalkeeper, Melker Ellborg.

“It’s difficult to explain how they won, but we lacked a little bit of concentration in the final pass,” Farke admitted. The disallowed goal from Joe Rodon, ruled offside by VAR, only added to the frustrations.

Sunderland, meanwhile, capitalised on their one clear opportunity; Diarra’s penalty decisive. Regis Le Bris said, “We defended really well. To win at Leeds means a lot. It was an intense game without oxygen.”

Norwich in the FA Cup, too

With crucial fixtures against relegation rivals looming, Leeds must find a way to translate their dominance in possession into tangible results. The upcoming matches will be pivotal for Farke’s side.

The manager will need to address the team’s finishing woes and ensure they are more clinical in front of goal. Failure to do so could see Leeds’ Premier League future hanging in the balance.
