Coventry City now want to beat Leeds United in race to sign £3m defender

Coventry City have joined the race to sign Leeds United target Nathaniel Adjei from Hammarby.

Leeds are said to be one of nine clubs keeping an eye on the 21-year-old defender, with Old Firm duo Celtic and Rangers also said to be keen.

But according to Alan Nixon, Coventry are the latest club to express an interest in signing Adjei, with Mark Robins set to have money to spend in January after a disappointing start to the season.

Nixon says that an offer of £3 million could be enough to tempt Hammarby into selling, with Coventry expected to test the resolve of the Swedish outfit.

Fellow Championship sides QPR, Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Preston North End are also said to be interested in the Ghanaian, while foreign outfits Anderlecht and Bologna have been mentioned too.

Leeds should move for Adjei if Cresswell leaves

Leeds are only likely to be in the market for a new centre-back if Charlie Cresswell leaves and that does not seem beyond the realms of possibility, despite the fact he signed a new deal in the summer.

Cresswell is unlikely to be happy with the very limited number of minutes he has played this season and as per the Yorkshire Evening Post, a loan move could be on the cards.

Liam Cooper is also out of contract next summer and at this stage, there has been no indication that he will be offered a new deal.

As such, centre-back could be a position that does require freshening up in the coming months, whether that be in the summer, or in January.

With the amount of clubs that are keeping tabs on the situation of Adjei, he is clearly a talented player. The fact he is only 21 also means there is still plenty of room for improvement, too.
