Asmir Begovic was given his marching orders on Wednesday night but Queens Park Rangers have taken to Twitter to confirm they have appealed successfully following Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Leeds United.
Leeds came into Wednesday night’s game in need of a win after being blown away by fellow-relegated side Southampton, losing 3-1. The Whites secured a 1-0 win, Crysencio Summerville scoring early on.
A lovely pass from Georginio Rutter – his fifth goal involvement of the season – found Summerville who tucked home his second of 23-24, a neat finish past QPR skipper Begovic. QPR gave little on the night.
With QPR pushing and Leeds holding on to a fifth clean sheet in six Championship games, Bamford was played in. The QPR defence misjudging the flight of the ball and relying on Begovic to come flying out.
Lunging in with a knee-high, studs-up tackle on Bamford – the one-time England international avoided contact and potential injury by flinging himself out of the way. Begovic was shown a straight red card.
Begovic red card rescinded after Bamford incident at Leeds
Bamford spoke to QPR boss Gareth Ainsworth after the match and confirmed that there had been no contact. But if contact had been made, Bamford would have been endangering himself – after injuries.
Bamford is only just back from injury, Wednesday night being only his second outing of the season and he is yet to start. Regardless, QPR have confirmed that Begovic’s sending off has now been rescinded.
So, it has worked out in the end. If contact had been made, Bamford might have got an injury. But he avoided one by jumping out of the way and a red has been revoked. Begovic can now face Blackburn.
