Gareth Ainsworth has confirmed Patrick Bamford told him there was no contact in the challenge that saw Asmir Begovic sent off in Leeds United’s win over QPR.
As per Phil Hay, Ainsworth was speaking after Leeds’ 1-0 victory against the London club at Elland Road on Wednesday night, in which Begovic was sent off in stoppage time.
Bamford was running onto a long ball from Pascal Struijk inside his own half, getting there before the on rushing goalkeeper Begovic.
Begovic’s foot was high and no where near the ball, which saw Bamford jump out of the way and go down.
As such, the referee felt obliged to go to his pocket and brandish Begovic with a red card, which saw striker Lyndon Dykes go in net as QPR used up all their substitutes.
Ainsworth shares what Bamford told him after game
QPR boss Ainsworth has confirmed after the game both Bamford and Begovic told him there was no contact in the challenge.
He said: “I’ve had verification from both players that there was no contact. Patrick’s a great lad, he said he jumped out the way.”
It is likely that if QPR appeal the red card they will see it rescinded given the admission from both players at full time.
Leeds’ only concern will be that Bamford does not receive retrospective action and get a ban as a result of the lack of contact.
Bamford has only just returned to action for Leeds after picking up a hamstring injury in pre-season, and looked sharp in his cameo from the bench against QPR.
