BBC West Midlands commentator Rob Gurney has told BBC Sounds that the exit of West Brom chief executive Ron Gourlay will place the future of Carlos Corberan in doubt – amid reports Leeds could look to hire the Baggies boss.
Corberan, 40, is in his third managerial spell since leaving Leeds in 2020 – after three years at Elland Road. He was the club’s Under-21 manager, before being promoted to work under boss Marcelo Bielsa on the first-team bench.
He then went to Huddersfield and worked wonders, taking the Terriers to the Championship play-off final. A dismal spell at Greek giants Olympiakos saw him quickly return to English football, improving a struggling West Brom side.
Corberan was linked with a return to Leeds in February when the club sacked Jesse Marsch. But instead, he chose to sign a new deal at West Brom. The Mail says that he is once again a contender, and has a £2m release clause.
Now, Corberan could be tempted with a return to Leeds – three years after his exit. Commentator Gurney says that the exit of Gourlay could throw Corberan’s future “up in the air”, amid reports that Leeds could make their move.
“Corberan got himself a new contract as a result of that Leeds interest. One of the main reasons was because of the relationship that he had with Gourlay. Gourlay’s departure has to throw Corberan’s future up into the air as well.”

Corberan would be a smart move. It would take Leeds back to the style of football that saw us got promoted under Bielsa, and of course, a large proportion of the Leeds players will know him. He was a well-liked member at Leeds.
Is he high-profile enough? Is he the kind of manager that would convince the likes of Tyler Adams and Willy Gnonto to stay put? That is questionable. But Leeds could do a whole lot worse than hiring the Spaniard this summer.
