It is well-known that golfing legend Colin Montgomerie is a big Leeds United fan and the veteran has been discussing Leeds’ push for promotion in the last few days.
Born in Scotland, Montgomerie moved to West Yorkshire as a child as part of his Father’s involvement with Fox’s Biscuits. As part of the move, his Father was handed Leeds United season tickets at Elland Road.
Now 61, Montgomerie has been a Leeds fan all his life but will be as nervous as any other Leeds fan as the race for promotion enters the final seven games this weekend. Leeds go away to Luton on Saturday.
Leeds have won once just in five games, while Luton have three wins and 10 points from the last possible 15. Montgomerie appeared on Golf Life this week over the last few days, alongside Jimmy Bullard.
Colin Montgomerie names three stars he wished Leeds didn’t sell
Leeds have had to cash in over the last couple of years. The 2023-24 finances were released by Leeds this week and it shows just how crucial the sales of Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville were needed.
Those were two sales Montgomerie wishes Leeds never had to rubber stamp however, given how good they were for Daniel Farke’s side last term. Montgomerie also mentioned Raphinha, on Golf Life.
Can that team right now get 35 points in the Premier League? Possibly not. Hate to admit it. We’ve lost Raphinha, Summerville, Gray. It is a shame that we’ve had to sell the players we’ve had to sell,” he said.
When listing the trio of names, former Soccer AM member Tubes also suggested Jack Harrison – which Montgomerie awkwardly replied by agreeing with him. Harrison is certainly not wanted at Elland Road.
Does Colin Montgomerie think Leeds will win promotion?
At the time of filming, which Tubes and Montgomerie point out, Leeds were at the top of the league. Of course, the 2-2 draw with Swansea has seen Leeds slip into second place behind leaders Sheffield United.
Montgomerie is cautiously confident that Farke and the Leeds players will get the job done. He points to the fixture list Leeds have, compared to that of Sheffield United and Burnley – who play each other.
“As Leeds fans, we have lots of self-doubt and negativity [laughs]. We have to stay ahead of Burnley and or Sheffield United. The games remaining, there are a lot of teams well below us. We should [go up].
If Leeds are to go up, a win against Luton would be welcomed with Sheffield United and Burnley also away from home. Tim Sherwood agrees with Montgomerie, that Leeds will win a place in the top tier.
