Leeds United’s win over Queens Park Rangers saw Daniel Farke’s side climb into second place in the Championship table, but Sheffield United changed that on the weekend.

Jayden Bogle and Joel Piroe scored goals as Leeds bounced back from their second loss of the season at Millwall, to beat QPR. Leeds are the best-performing club in England’s top-four leagues when at home.

But Leeds were immediately overtaken by Chris Wilder’s Blades on Sunday, as Sheffield United secured a narrow 1-0 win over local rivals Sheffield Wednesday. Tyrese Campbell scored the only goal of the game.

It saw Sheffield United go level on points with leaders Sunderland, who without Jobe Bellingham could only manage a 2-2 draw with Coventry, despite Regis Le Bris’ side taking a two-goal lead on Saturday.

Chris Wilder comments on Sheffield United regaining second spot

The Championship table reads like this then, a third of the way through 2024-25. Sunderland are top on 31 points with a goal difference of 14. Sheffield United second, also 31 points, but a goal difference of 12.

Leeds are in third, two points behind Sunderland and Sheffield United while boasting the same difference as Wilder’s men. Burnley are fourth on 27 points, and Wilder said he is delighted with his Blades side.

As per the Evening Post, Wilder said: “We’ll definitely celebrate, as you can understand and imagine. It’s been a tough period from international break to international break with everything that has gone on.

“The way the team has recovered is absolutely magnificent, four wins on the spin, two points per game, joint top of the division, most wins in there. It’s a good start, it gives ourselves a platform to move on.”

Leeds, Sheffield United and Sunderland’s next five matches

The race for automatic promotion is hotting up nicely with 31 league matches left to play. Club football takes a breather as the final international break of the year takes shape, before Leeds go to Swansea.

Looking at the fixtures, there is no doubt that Sheffield United have the toughest run over the next five matches. Three away games, against Coventry, West Brom and Millwall – three tough places to go.

That, and a mouthwatering clash between the current first and second-placed teams on November 29 at Bramall Lane. Leeds realistically will be hopeful of taking at least three or wins from their next five.
