Matt O’Riley was a name linked with Leeds United towards the end of last summer’s window and now, Chris Sutton says he could leave but only at the end of the season – as Atletico Madrid move.
The 23-year-old has sparkled at Celtic since Ange Postecoglou lured him north of the border from MK Dons in January 2022. He’s had a hand in 46 goals in 101 Celtic games. This season, O’Riley‘s on fire.
A whopping 22 goal involvements in 29 games from midfield – including 10 goals of his own. It comes after Leeds made a £10m bid for the midfielder last summer. But, a record fee could now be needed.
Indeed, it is reported he would only go if a fee north of Kieran Tierney’s £25m move was tabled. Atletico Madrid are keen, after starring against Diego Simeone’s side in the Champions League earlier this term.
Sky Sports report that Atleti have tabled a loan bid with an obligation to buy. But with Celtic in a title race as Rangers improve, Parkhead icon Sutton has urged Celtic to keep – at least, until the summer.

Whether he remains on Leeds’ shortlist is unclear. Certainly, while Leeds are in the Championship, any move for O’Riley is unlikely – given he would cost too much, and O’Riley would surely reject a move.
He will also feel, perhaps as Sutton suggests, that he wants to see his Celtic career out by winning the title this season. If Leeds gain promotion and O’Riley does stay then surely, Leeds have every chance.
But, he would cost a handsome figure that will surely be north of £20m even after negotiation. O’Riley is a special talent and if Celtic are to win the Premiership this season, he has to stay. Atleti will tempt him.
