The Telegraph report that Leeds United star Tyler Adams is one of five summer targets for Newcastle United this summer after his ‘character and combative nature’ impressed Eddie Howe – with a fee likely to be less than £30m.

Adams, 24, is one of only a few players that can hold their head high at Leeds after a dismal 2022-23 campaign. The USA skipper managed 26 games for Leeds, before the midfielder was forced to undergo hamstring surgery.

But a good season for the ex-Leipzig midfielder, who also captained his country at the World Cup in Qatar. Now, he is likely to be sold by Leeds after relegation – although, in an ideal world, Leeds would love to keep hold of Adams.

The latest report claims that during the 0-0 draw between Leeds and Newcastle at St. James’ Park on New Year’s Day, Adams caught the eye. It was a backs-to-the-wall type display, and Adams aggression impressed the Toon.

The report lists him – alongside Southampton duo Kyle Walker-Peters and Romeo Lavia, and Leicester’s Harvey Barnes and James Maddison – as one of five players Newcastle want. It is claimed he could go for under £30m.

Newcastle could really do with a holding midfielder. Most Toon fans will agree that while Bruno Guimaraes is superb in the no.4 role in front of the defence, he is best when box to box. Jonjo Shelvey was sold to Forest in January.

So, the Toon could do with a defensive midfielder and Adams would fill that void. Playing him behind Guimaraes and perhaps a Joelinton or a Joe Willock would see Newcastle boast a midfield fitting of a Champions League side.

But, Howe’s side are likely not to be the only club looking at a move for Adams. A recent report from 90Min stated that Newcastle are rivalling Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United for the ex-Leipzig and New York star.
