Championship player desperate for his club to sign £8m Leeds target, from Everton

The race to sign Everton striker Tom Cannon is reportedly heating up with Leeds United said to be keeping tabs on his future – but Preston are front runners, and North End midfielder Brad Potts is desperate for his side to sign him.

Cannon, 20, is on the radar of a number of clubs after starring for Preston during the second half of last season. The Irishman joined Preston in January and went on to score eight goals in 21 games. He is likely to return to Preston.

Sun reporter Alan Nixon said on his Patreon channel that Preston are confident of a deal – and hope to get it done on Wednesday. But they had hoped to do it last week – only for Sean Dyche to stall. Cannon was a sub on Saturday.

However, there is permanent interest in Cannon – something that would blow Preston out of the water, and may be more tempting for Everton. Stoke and Sunderland have asked Everton about a fee, while Leeds are keeping tabs.

A fee of £8m is touted by Nixon – who also says Andrea Radrizzani’s Sampdoria are keen. But Preston man Potts is keen for Cannon to rejoin Preston – despite Ryan Lowe’s side producing a 2-1 win over Sunderland on Saturday.

“We could do with TC back couldn’t we,” Potts said, as quoted on the weekend by the Lancashire Post. “We’ll see won’t we. I’ve been keeping in touch with him a little bit here and there. Hopefully we’ll get him in but we’ll just see.”

It is one to watch. Cannon clearly has plenty of suitors and with a return on loan to Preston taking its time, it only increases the chances of Everton signing a permanent move. Surely, Everton would rather cash on the table for him.

Sunderland, Stoke, Sampdoria and Leeds also want him. It is unclear if Radrizzani’s Sampdoria can spend as much as £8m, given the financial issues they had before Radrizzani took over. Stoke and Sunderland certainly can spend.

Leeds need to sell before bringing in more big-money signings – as proven by our last three, costing a combined £400k. Joe Rodon is a loan, Karl Darlow cost £400k and Sam Byram a free agent. But as stated, one to watch.
