Jesse Marsch has done a lot of talking recently, speaking to a number of outlets and even appearing alongside Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football – but his tactics were always questionable.
Marsch‘s tenure ended after just 12 months, in which Leeds narrowly won survival in 2021-22. Then, in 2022-23, Leeds were relegated and Marsch was in charge for two third of the campaign. A failure.
He has spoken recently of how he felt Leeds were unlucky, and should have won more games than we did under his guidance. He has also declared himself delighted at how well Leeds are playing this term.
Under Marsch, Leeds played narrow football – trying to break through the middle of the pitch without any width from the wingers. A tactic which Marsch hoped would allow his full-backs to fly forward.
But it was easy to defend against and also, easy to counter attack against. Skubala worked under the American and then replaced him in a caretaker role – and he spoke to Coaches’ Voice about his tactics.
“Tactically, I put my own touch on how I wanted the team to go out against United. Jesse had a brilliant way, which I agreed with a lot, but I wanted to put my own fingerprints on the team,” Skubala claimed.
“In those games, we played with a little bit more width. We were aggressive in the wide areas, and put Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville in the team. I thought both carried more attacking threat,” he said.

Skubala is now impressing at League One side Lincoln City. After a solid start which included two wins in his first four games, Lincoln went on a run of 10 matches without a win. But Skubala has turned it round.
Lincoln have gone 11 games unbeaten, winning six times and on the weekend – the former Leeds U21 gaffer watched his side beat Barnsley 5-1 away from home. An incredible win. He’s certainly impressing.
