Leeds United attacker Wilfried Gnonto has once again been hailed as Italy U21s’ best performer after their 2-2 draw at Republic of Ireland on Tuesday.
Gnonto scored twice in Italy’s 7-0 win over San Marino last week but perhaps his display last night was more impressive considering the step up in opposition and his recent injury scare.
The Leeds star once again netted a brace to salvage a point for his team, including a 96th minute equaliser when Italy had looked dead and buried.
And Gnonto’s contribution has been recognised in OA Sport Calcio’s post-match player ratings piece, as they labelled him Italy’s best performer after receiving no help from his teammates.
His goals ensured Italy remain unbeaten and top of Group A in their quest to qualify for the 2025 U21 European Championships, with 11 points from their opening five matches.
Gnonto a class above his Italy teammates
Gnonto was also hailed as the best player on the pitch against San Marino and so it is clear just how important his contribution has been over this international break.
They wrote: “Gnonto – 7.5. The best on the field for our national team by secondment. It varies all over the offensive front, gives no points of reference to the Irish and, on a couple of occasions, also touches the goal. He procures the penalty kick that, at 45 of the first half, transforms for the 1-1.
“When he accelerates he sends the defence of the hosts into difficulty, but the teammates do not help him. At 89th he shoots on goal and hits a resounding post that would have deserved more luck. Only against everyone he also goes to find the goal of 2-2 at the last breath. Deviant, but very heavy!”
It would have been easy for Gnonto to sulk after being dropped from Italy’s senior side to the U21s in this break, but he has clearly recognised the importance of performing well.
Italy were less than inspiring in securing their qualification for the EUROs next summer against Ukraine on Monday, and so Gnonto more than has a chance of making the squad if he carries on performing like this.
