Charlie Cresswell is being linked with the exit door at Leeds United during the January window, and a number of sides are interested. Carlton Palmer has picked which club would be his “best fit”.

Cresswell, 21, was missing from the Leeds squad that beat Birmingham City 3-0 on New Year’s Day. The England U21 star has failed to make the match day squad 13 times in our last 16 Championship games.

Daniel Farke made it clear that while he wants to keep Cresswell at Elland Road this month – especially, with Pascal Struijk injured – the decision is up to Cresswell himself. He can’t be blamed for going on loan.

Rangers, Sunderland, Ipswich and Middlesbrough are among the clubs said to be keen on Cresswell. But Palmer, a former Leeds player, has picked the club he thinks the Leeds academy product should join.

Palmer, speaking to Football League World about Cresswell, believes Middlesbrough’s defensive crisis would see the Leeds player go straight into the side under Michael Carrick, alongside Sam Greenwood.

“Middlesbrough, he would automatically go straight into their side given the injury crisis they’ve got in the defensive areas. Ipswich are flying at the moment, going for promotion to the Premier League.

“Highly unlikely they’d let Cresswell go to a rival. Who would fit the bill for him? Right now Boro would be the best fit for him. Given what Carrick did last season, they could end up in playoffs again this season.”

Carlton Palmer picks Middlesbrough as best for Charlie Cresswell

Cresswell is a player with massive potential and right now, it is going to waste at Leeds. He is a top, top player and one that could easily go and have a career in the Premier League. He needs to go and play.

A move to Rangers would be incredible. Playing in the Europa League knockout rounds and battling for trophies. But if he wants to stay in England, Boro or Sunderland would be excellent moves for Cresswell.

Michael Beale, while in charge at Rangers, wanted to sign Cresswell and is now Sunderland gaffer. But Boro, given their lack of options in the middle of the defence, would be a good move too for Cresswell.
