Georginio Rutter and Dan James are enjoying their best spells of form in a Leeds United shirt since arriving at Elland Road – and Ben Parker has told LS11 that the duo have benefitted from relegation.

Both have been on fire for Leeds this season. Rutter has seven goals and assists in his 13 league games, creating more chances than any other player in the Championship. James also has seven involvements.

The Welshman got a brace on Saturday, taking his tally to three goals and four assists. Last season, it was a different story for both. Rutter of course, struggled – albeit, not his fault – having joined in January.

Unable to speak English, moving to a new country at 21, joining a side consigned to relegation. It was never going to start well initially, for Rutter. But, he has been made first choice and is on absolute fire.

For James, well he has returned to Leeds after disappointing loan at Fulham last term – scoring only three goals in 23. Ex-Leeds defender Parker says James and Rutter needed relegation to shine for us.

“It is amazing what confidence does to a player. Yes, we’re in the Championship – but someone like Dan James, Georginio, probably needed it [relegation]. To come out the firing line, win games,” Parker said.

“They’ve got ability, but they need confidence. It comes down to man management and getting the best out of your players, so credit to Farke because he is doing it,” the ex-Leeds man continued on LS11.

Rutter needed a way of breaking into the Leeds side and becoming a regular. He needed the confidence to go out and shine week in, week out. Both relegation to the second tier, and Farke, have helped him.

James is a Premier League player, and has proven as such. But, he has lost his way over the last year or two and perhaps relegation has helped him realise that he is too good for this level. Two crucial players.
