BBC pundit issues verdict on Joel Piroe after Leeds draw with Coventry

Leigh Bromby has issued his verdict on the performance of Joel Piroe as Leeds United were held to a 1-1 draw by Coventry City on Saturday.

Joel Piroe has definitely been a good signing for Leeds. He has scored eight times in the second tier since signing for Daniel Farke’s side. And his goals are often taken with a touch of class.

Neil Redfearn noted that he loves watching Piroe play. And Jermaine Beckford has even compared Piroe with Dennis Bergkamp following his goal against Millwall earlier this season.

However, when Piroe does not score, fans would be forgiven for not noticing that he is on the pitch. And worryingly for Leeds, the 24-year-old has now not found the back of the net in his last three appearances.

And Bromby told BBC Radio Leeds (broadcast on 16/12; 17:10) that he was not particularly impressed by the forward’s display in the frustrating draw with Coventry at Elland Road today.

“He was quiet. The type of player, he’s a moments player. The Bristol game I came to, he had one shot and scored that goal,” he said.

“Today, he didn’t have any opportunities. None dropped to him. He was innocuous in terms of his involvement for goals. I can understand why he’s playing him because he’s a top, top player. We all know that.

“But yeah, today wasn’t one of his best games. He wasn’t involved at all. I can’t remember him having a goal involvement at all, or mentioning him at all. So yeah, you’d expect a little more.”

Daniel Farke has the depth to make changes

Leeds have been outstanding for much of the campaign. And Piroe has been superb. However, four points from the last three games is not good enough when you consider how strong the top two have been.

When everything clicks for the front four, Leeds arguably look a class apart from almost anything else in the division. But the Whites are finding it incredibly difficult to break teams down and then find the back of the net.

Obviously, Crysencio Summerville could hardly be doing anymore. And Dan James has surpassed expectations so far this season.

In fairness, Piroe has done so many good things over the course of the campaign. And you would think that he is going to be in and around 20 league goals by the end of the season.

But something is not working for Leeds right now. And given how much attacking depth we now have, something may have to change.
