Leeds United loanee Max Wober has been labelled as ‘average’ after his performance for Austria last night.
Wober and his Austrian teammates were playing in their final qualification match ahead of next summer’s EUROs in Germany, making the trip to face Estonia.
Austria, who had already secured their passage to the tournament anyway, ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Konrad Laimer and Philipp Lienhart, though according to the Salzburger Nachrichten, Wober’s performance was nothing special.
Wober has played primarily as a centre-back for both Leeds and Borussia Monchengladbach over the last 11 months, but with Real Madrid’s David Alaba very much first choice there, he was at left-back.
Given his lack of pace, it is not really a position which brings the best out of Wober, and that was certainly evident in a game which Austria dominated.

In Salzburger Nachrichten’s post-match player ratings piece, Wober’s performance was labelled as ‘average’ due to his lack of threat in attack.
“Maximilian Wöber. The left full-back was never challenged defensively, and he was hardly able to make an impact on the offensive. Average.”
Wober has been winning plenty of praise for his performances at Borussia Monchengladbach this season, though that has almost always been at centre-back.
It is clear that the 25-year-old excels in the defensive aspect of the game but going forward is clearly not his strong point, and that becomes clear in matches such as last night.
Wober is set for an interesting summer next year with both the EUROs, and the possibility of leaving Elland Road permanently, if Gladbach wish to do so.
