At a bargain £7m, 25-year-old is a risk for Leeds but it is one worth taking – opinion

Leeds United are continuing to target players from domestic clubs and the latest to be linked comes in the form of West Brom attacker Grady Diangana – a player who is available at £7m and at that price, he is a risk worth taking.

Diangana, 25, has struggled to repay the £18m fee that West Brom paid West Ham in the summer of 2020 – after starring on loan with the Baggies in 2019-20, helping Slaven Bilic’s West Brom gain a place in the Premier League.

That season on loan, he had a hand in 15 goals in 31 games. Since then, just 12 goals and assists in his next 98 matches for the Midlands club. West Brom are keen to sell players in order to give Carlos Corberan money to spend.

The Express & Star state Leeds – among a number of Championship rivals and Saudi Arabian clubs – are interested in Diangana. A fee of £7m is needed. Such a move would see West Brom take an £11m hit on the ex-Hammers star.

Leeds do have options out wide and as things stand, it is quite clear that the need for another winger is almost zero. Dan James, Helder Costa, Ian Poveda, Willy Gnonto, Cree Summerville, Luis Sinisterra and Jack Harrison remain.

Now, Costa is training with the club but has not been involved in any of our friendlies – despite travelling to Oslo to face Manchester United. Gnonto and Harrison are likely to go. Summerville, James, Poveda and Sinisterra may stay.

But there is always a twist. If one of those four leaves then a move for Diangana makes sense. If it gets to that stage in the final weeks of the summer, and a number of players have gone, then a move for Diangana would be superb.

He is a potential bargain at £7m. At 25, he is still young enough to realise his potential and prove his previous £18m fee. If Leeds do end up needing a winger, then Diangana is a risk worth taking – Daniel Farke’s style would suit him.
