While Switzerland celebrates an incredible run to the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, Leeds United attacker Noah Okafor is quietly enduring one of the strangest, most heavily scrutinised individual tournament campaigns in recent memory.
The Swiss national team made history on Tuesday night, outlasting Colombia in a gruelling, tense penalty shootout in Vancouver to book a dream quarter-final date with Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
Yet, despite the collective euphoria sweeping across the nation, the media spotlight back home has often switched to a player who can barely get a sniff on the pitch: Leeds’ own Noah Okafor.
The 26-year-old has become a certified ‘curious case’ for the Nati. Despite equalising the record for the most Premier League goals by a Swiss international in a single season for Leeds last term, Okafor has been restricted to a measly 19 minutes of action all summer, coming as a late cameo during the 2-0 round of 32 win over Algeria.
That isolation has ignited heavy talk that the winger is on the outs with Swiss coach Murat Yakin.
Now, a trail of bizarre media updates, social media blackouts, and public disappearances have turned the Elland Road star into one of Switzerland’s biggest talking points just days before they face the greatest player of all time.

Noah Okafor given the Mr Bean treatment
The sheer frustration surrounding Okafor’s benching came to a comical head during Tuesday’s live text coverage by Swiss broadsheet Der Bund.
As Switzerland’s attack sputtered against Colombia, the newspaper’s live blog read like a desperate plea for the Leeds man’s introduction.
Just after the 30-minute mark, Der Bund noted: “Noah Okafor was apparently being considered for a start today. Now he [Yakin], too, sees that there isn’t much going on offensively… Okafor’s speed could be a solution.“

As the match dragged into the second half, the journalists openly lost patience. By the 78th minute, they posted a classic, trending GIF of Mr Bean waiting impatiently for a ride to symbolise Okafor’s endless warm-up.
When Yakin made changes in the 87th-minute – bringing on Cedric Itten and Silvan Widmer while a furious Breel Embolo walked off – Der Bund expressed total shock, using another impatient Mr Bean meme minutes later.
By the 103rd minute, when Zeki Amdouni was subbed on to officially kill any chance of Okafor appearing against Colombia, the blog posted a GIF of Homer Simpson retreating backwards into a bush, noting: “… So Okafor won’t be playing today.“
PROVE ME WRONG: Noah Okafor is Leeds’ most-effective player right now.
Gerrard thinks so.
The Leeds man’s blackout and bathroom mystery
Away from the tactical confusion, Okafor’s behaviour off the pitch has sent the Swiss rumour mill into hyperdrive.
The winger has been noticeably radio-silent on social media throughout the tournament, culminating in him completely blacking out his Instagram profile picture to the confusion of Leeds fans.
The paranoia reached a boiling point following the victory over Algeria. As the entire squad danced on the pitch with the travelling support, TV footage captured Okafor immediately walking down the tunnel alone.
The incident caused such a storm among worried fans that major Swiss outlet Blick had to publish a dedicated investigative piece to figure out if the Leeds star had mutinied against Yakin.
The reality? It was far more human than a dressing room civil war.
As Blick revealed:
“Amidst the euphoria… one player was missing from the team’s celebrations. Was Okafor still upset? Was he unhappy with coach Murat Yakin? No, the reason is quite simple – and human. The Leeds star simply had to use the restroom and therefore missed part of the celebrations.“
Whether it is a simple bathroom break or a deeper tactical freeze-out, Okafor’s World Cup journey has been anything but ordinary.
With a monumental quarter-final against Lionel Messi and Argentina up next on Saturday, Leeds fans will be watching closely to see if Yakin finally unleashes his secret weapon on the global stage – or if the Mr Bean waiting game continues.
