The January transfer window is nearly open and it gives Leeds United the perfect chance to add a bit more quality to their squad to ensure a return to the Premier League.

2024 has been a year of mixed fortunes for Leeds United, with a heart-breaking play-off final defeat to Southampton being followed up with a scintillating start to the new campaign.

Leeds kept faith with manager Daniel Farke and he has repaid it by ensuring the club go into 2025 on top of the Championship table and in prime position to finally return to the Premier League.

Competition is fierce, though, with Sheffield United and Burnley breathing heavily down their necks, which is where the January transfer window could come in handy.

Some shrewd additions during the winter window could be a big boost to ensure Leeds get over the line.

When does the January transfer window open?

Leeds will have the chance to start making new signings on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

How long is the January transfer window?

The January transfer window will last for the entire month and then beyond, as it actually does not club until 11 pm on Monday, February 3.

Explaining the reasoning for the late deadline day, the Premier League explained in May:

“Meanwhile, the winter window will open on Wednesday 1 January 2025 and will close at 23:00 GMT on Monday 3 February 2025.

“To ensure harmonisation with the major leagues in Europe, the closing dates were set following discussions with the EFL, DFL, Serie A, La Liga, and LFP, who will all close their Summer and Winter windows on 30 August and 3 February respectively.”

Who Leeds could sign before the window closes

After missing out on Emi Buendia and Louie Barry, Leeds have seemingly turned their attention to signing a striker instead of a playmaker.

Cameron Archer has emerged as a target, though Leeds have reportedly seen a first loan offer rejected by Southampton.

There is also speculation surrounding Newcastle left-back Matt Targett, though contradicting reports make it unclear if a deal will happen.

What Daniel Farke has said about Leeds transfers

Any Leeds fans hoping for an influx of new players in January may wind up disappointed, as Farke has already admitted he doesn’t want to make sweeping changes to his squad.

Speaking ahead of the Derby win, the manager was asked about his transfer window plans. He said: “I will stick with January 4 and we will then have a short breadth and we can then speak about what is necessary to do.

“As I’ve mentioned before, I expect a really quiet January because we are in great shape. We don’t want to risk too much. The spirit of our group is good.

“You always have to stay awake but we won’t make any decisions in terms of incomings or outgoings before January 4.

“Maybe around the FA Cup game we can have a few discussions on what is necessary or wished but not before.”
