‘Agent should have been knighted’: Leeds man has already made a mockery of Paul Merson’s bizarre claim

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has been quick to make a mockery of Paul Merson’s pre-season criticism of his appointment.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on the eve of Leeds’ Championship opener with Cardiff City, Merson expressed his disbelief at how Farke had landed the job at Elland Road.

Leeds had been on the lookout for a new manager for a number of weeks after informing Sam Allardyce he would not be kept on having spent the final four matches of last season in charge.

After links to the likes of Patrick Vieira, Scott Parker and Steven Gerrard, Farke was the man Leeds eventually turned to following a thorough interview process.

With Leeds having just been relegated from the Premier League, San Francisco 49ers Enterprises were keen to find a manager with Championship pedigree, of which Farke has plenty of.

Merson criticised Leeds’ Farke appointment

Farke twice won the Championship title during his time at Norwich City, but that did not stop Merson from blasting his appointment at Leeds, claiming that ‘his agent should have been knighted’.

He said: “His agent should have been knighted. How’s he got that job? I know he got them (Norwich) out before, but this league’s a lot harder. He used to be at Norwich where they couldn’t help but get into the play-offs.

“I think he’s very fortunate. I like him, don’t get me wrong, but he’s got the biggest job. For me, they’re one of the biggest clubs about, and he’s got that job, and without being horrible, it’s not like he’s just won ten games on the trot. I know he’s got pedigree, but he’s done well, because this is a big, big, big job.

“He’s fortunate to get this job, with what happened at the end with Norwich. He did well at the start, but, you know. Portsmouth aren’t coming back for me because I was in the team that got them promoted. Time moves on!”

Farke makes mockery of Merson comments

It has not taken long for Farke to make a complete mockery of Merson’s comments and in all honesty, it is difficult to see how he ever came to this conclusion.

Farke knows what it takes to get out of this division playing attractive football, which is exactly what Leeds were crying out for in the summer.

Not only has he quickly got his Leeds squad used to his style, but he also handled an extremely difficult transfer window admirably, which not many managers could’ve done.
