Sam Greenwood has left Leeds United after five years at the club, sealing a surprise switch to Poland with top-tier side Pogon.
Sam Greenwood never quite made the grade at Leeds United. The former Sunderland and Arsenal youth player joined the club in 2020 under Marcelo Bielsa and he looked like a signing for the future and in glimpses we saw huge potential in Greenwood.
But during his five-year stay at Elland Road, the 23-year-old made just 35 total appearances for the club, scoring only one goal. The last two seasons, Greenwood spent time away on loan with the likes of Middlesbrough and Preston North End.
And with both clubs in the Championship, Greenwood showed promise, albeit without blowing the division away. But following Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League, Greenwood has left the club on a permanent deal.

Sam Greenwood hoping for success in Poland after leaving Leeds United
Earlier in the week, journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Greenwood was set to leave Leeds United and seal a surprise switch to Pogon Szczecin. The Polish Ekstraklasa side finished 4th in the Polish top tier last season, narrowly missing out on a place in Europe, and after six games of this season they sit in 11th place of the table.
On Wednesday, Pogon confirmed that Greenwood had joined the club on a three-year contract with an option to extend it by a further year, and Greenwood has spoken out on his goals with his new club.
He told the club: “I’m delighted. I found a beautiful stadium and a beautiful city here. My goal is to be a great addition to the team, to help them, and of course, to win something with them. I know the Ekstraklasa is a tough league where anyone can beat anyone. I’ll fight for the team and give my all for the fans.”

What’s next for Leeds United in the transfer window?
The summer transfer window closes on September 1st, and despite Leeds United having signed 10 new players this summer, Daniel Farke looks as though he could sign one or two more after what’s been a mixed start to the 2025-26 season.
Particularly in attack, Leeds United look as though they’re trying to do business with ongoing links to Bilal El Khannouss at Leicester City. But after Leeds have spent more than £100m on new players this summer, it looks as though player departures might be the focus in the next few days.
After Greenwood, we could see the likes of Patrick Bamford and Illan Meslier move on, though neither player seems to have an out-and-out suitor right now.
Loan moves could be fashioned for both players if they’re unable to offload them permanently, and it could be good news for both players who are unlikely to feature at all this season.
