Sam Byram’s Leeds United teammates were left very impressed by his ‘ability and poise’ during pre-season.

That is according to Phil Hay, who wrote a long read on Byram for the Athletic this morning after another excellent performance at the weekend for Leeds.

Byram got on the scoresheet for Daniel Farke’s side as they dismantled Watford 3-0 at Elland Road, just under eight years after he scored his last goal for Leeds in a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest in December 2015.

The 30-year-old has provided a cheap and reliable fix to Leeds’ long-term problems at left-back, with his performances continuing to go from strength-to-strength.

Given his injury record over the last few seasons there was understandable scepticism from supporters when he was handed a new deal, but those have been quickly put to bed.

If the Leeds squad were impressed by Byram’s ‘ability and poise’ during pre-season, they will no doubt be even more so with how he has played during the first few games of the campaign.

There is yet to be a winger that has got the better of him in any game so far, while he is also always a decent threat going forward.

It was clear to see in the celebration after his goal on Saturday just how much it meant to him, but also his teammates too, who were quick to mob him in front of the Kop.

Byram has only picked up one minor injury so far in his time back at Leeds, and long may that continue, given how crucial he is already becoming to the back four.

Leeds have now kept four clean sheets in a row in the Championship, with Byram having played a key part in two of those.
