Ben Brereton Diaz has emerged as a surprise target for Leeds United in the January window and on Wednesday night, he was left on Villarreal’s bench again – for the sixth time since moving to Spain.
The 24-year-old is struggling for game time at the La Liga side this season. It comes after being signed by Villarreal, from Blackburn. He scored 36 league goals in two seasons at the Championship outfit.
But at Villarreal, he is struggling to rediscover that form. Clocking up 19 appearances for the Spanish side, he has failed to score or lay on an assist. Reports say that Villarreal could be willing to let him go.
A loan deal could be on the cards and Leeds are said to be interested in a potential move to bring him back to England, and the Championship. Premier League clubs and Boca Juniors are also interested.
Rated at £8.6m, Brereton Diaz was left on Villarreal’s bench last night as they picked up a 3-2 win over Celta Vigo. It is the sixth time this season in which Brereton Diaz has been overlooked by Villarreal.

If Leeds are to make a move, Brereton Diaz remaining on the bench in his side’s last game before the Yellow Submarine take to action again on January 2 will surely having him thinking about an early exit.
Do Leeds need him? More fire power is always welcome and with Patrick Bamford struggling to find his 2020-21 form again, Leeds could look to make a move for a striker. Brereton Diaz is proven at this level.
But, surely, Leeds have other areas that require strengthening and if we are going to be busy in January, it will only be for a left-back or a no.10. One to watch as earlier reports say, but surely, an unlikely one.
