Boca Juniors are now said to be interested in signing Ben Brereton Diaz from Villarreal in January, just a few weeks after Leeds United were touted with a potential move for the Chilean international.

Brereton Diaz, 24, starred for Blackburn over the last two seasons – scoring 36 Championship goals for Rovers despite often being used as a winger. His form for Blackburn, and Chile, earned him a move.

He joined Villarreal in the summer. But at Villarreal, Brereton Diaz has struggled. He has failed to score a single goals in 19 outings, or an assist. He thought he scored the winner during a 1-1 draw with Sevilla.

But it was harshly ruled out. Leeds have been touted as “one to watch” ahead of a possible move for the Chile star in January. Palace, Burnley, Leicester, Southampton and West Brom are also being linked.

But a report from TyC Sports in Argentina now claims that South American giants Argentina are keen on luring Brereton Diaz to the club – in the midst of a presidential change. He will cost a fee of £8.6m.

Boca Juniors now want Leeds United target Ben Brereton Diaz

Brereton Diaz has a big decision to make. It is clearly not working at Villarreal and to maintain his place in Chile’s National Team, he needs to go and join a Premier League side. A top-tier side, where he plays.

A move to Leeds would be a backwards step for Brereton Diaz, at least to begin with. If he helped us gain promotion, then it might suit all parties involved. A Premier League could would surely be his best.

But, a move away from Europe and join Boca would be a move that Brereton Diaz should only be looking at later in his career – not at this early stage. He has a contract at Villarreal until the summer of 2027.
