Robbie Fowler predicted that Steven Gerrard could join a Championship side with “real ambition” as his next job in a recent Mirror column and now, the 49ers could reportedly lure Gerrard to Leeds United if they complete a takeover.
Gerrard, 43, embarked on his managerial career at Rangers in the summer of 2018 – after working at Liverpool with the U18’s. He worked wonders, winning the 20-21 Premiership unbeaten over Celtic. He impressed in Europe, too.
It saw him move to Aston Villa in 2021, after Dean Smith was sacked. But little less than a year later and Gerrard had been sacked, winning only 13 of his 40 matches in charge. He has been out of work since, returning to do punditry.
But, he is expected to want another crack at management. His time at Villa means a return to a Premier League job is unlikely – but a Championship side with promotion hopes may tempt him. The Sun say the 49ers are interested.
“I wouldn’t rule out a Championship side with real ambition. An owner with a bit of bottle. One thing I can guarantee, he still has a lot to offer as a manager. This is not the end of him, for sure,” Fowler wrote in his 2022 Mirror column.
Fowler predicted Gerrard could join Championship side, Leeds eye move
Gary McAllister was right when speaking after the 4-1 loss to Tottenham, in saying that Leeds need to hire a gaffer similar to Burnley appointing Vincent Kompany. Kompany had actually struggled to some degree at Anderlecht prior.
But he romped to victory. McAllister says Leeds need a young manager, with his own identity, that can command a dressing room. Gerrard is certainly that. His appointment would surely see McAllister return to Leeds as assistant.
A move to Elland Road would see Leeds fans worried, and perhaps critical of the decision. But a few early wins and everything could change. There is no doubt that appointing Gerrard would excite some fans, and some players.
