Gary McAllister has told BT Sport after Leeds United’s relegation to the Championship he would like to see the club hire a manager like Burnley’s Vincent Kompany – urging the club to get someone who commands the dressing room.
Another dismal season has ended in a return to the Championship. A wait of 16 years to reach the promised land, only to go back down after just three seasons. Now, Leeds face a summer of tumultuous change, top to bottom.
The board are likely to change hands, form Andrea Radrizzani to the San Francisco 49ers. The club need to replace Victor Orta, and Sam Allardyce is also likely to be replaced. Then, there is the players themselves. Many will leave.
Numerous clubs have been linked with the likes of Illan Meslier, Robin Koch, Tyler Adams, Marc Roca, Rodrigo, Jack Harrison and more. McAllister – a former Leeds player and manager – was asked who he would like to see in charge.
“We’re asking what type of guy, I know Vincent Kompany went to to Belgium and cut his teeth there – but somebody along those lines. Somebody who can come in and command the dressing room,” McAllister said, on BT Sport.

Of course, McAllister is not suggesting Kompany himself. The Belgian has just gained promotion in his first season to the Premier League with Burnley, signing a new contract at Turf Moor. But McAllister is right, someone similar.
Someone who is young, has a specific style of football but one that is a leader. One that can come in and everyone will listen to him. Remind you of someone? Marcelo Bielsa, of course, has just taken the job as Uruguay manager.
It will be interesting to see where Leeds turn. Andoni Iraola is going to leave Rayo Vallecano but one would imagine that given he was an Orta target, Leeds may be looking at other options. Iraola is good enough for the top tier, too.
