£3m Leeds United player scores ‘exquisite’ free-kick for loan side in 5-0 win, given 9/10 rating

Leeds United have sanctioned the exits of five players on loan this summer and four of those five were in action on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup, with one scoring a brace.

Daniel Farke’s side were not in action in the Carabao Cup after suffering a dismal 3-0 home defeat to Luke Ayling’s Middlesbrough in the second game of the season. Boro were beaten 5-0 by Stoke City last night.

But four of Leeds‘ five out-on-loan players featured on Tuesday night. Sonny Perkins started in Leyton Orient’s 1-0 win away at Millwall, while Darko Gyabi could not prevent Plymouth losing 2-0 to Watford.

Jack Harrison was also in action, as he came off the bench in Everton’s 2-0 win over Doncaster. The other in action and the winner of the four in action was Sam Greenwood, as Preston cruised to a huge 5-0 win.

Sam Greenwood shines in 5-0 Preston win, scores free-kick

The £3m Leeds player netted a brilliant free-kick to open the scoring as Preston starred in the second round of the Cup, winning away at League Two side Harrogate – one of Leeds’ pre-season opponents.

Greenwood netted twice while striker Miluton Osmajic got himself a hat-trick. A player that Leeds fans may remember was the man who flopped to the ground as Illan Meslier was sent off at Preston last term.

Greenwood has gone on loan for a second time away from Leeds after a solid campaign at Boro last term. Under Paul Heckingbottom, he made his second start and his free-kick is seen below at 27 seconds in.

Whether Greenwood has any kind of future at Elland Road remains to be seen but given he has gone on loan for a second season, it is likely that next summer will see Greenwood depart Leeds permanently.

This season then, is Greenwood putting himself in the shop window ahead of the 2025 summer window. Certainly on Tuesday, he showed what he can do and the Lancashire Evening Post handed him a 9/10.
