25-year-old says Leeds United will be promoted, throws his Elland Road future into doubt

Max Wober told Austrian media he thinks Leeds United will gain promotion to the Premier League, but says that promotion throws his future into doubt and takes it out of his hands next summer.

Wober, 25, left Leeds on loan in the summer, using one of the relegation loan clauses. Eight players did so, after our drop to the Championship. After six months, he joined Daniel Farke‘s old side Gladbach.

So, just 19 games into his Leeds career, Wober moved to Gladbach. It came as a little shock, given the belief was that he’d stick around in the summer. But, as soon as Gladbach came calling, Wober was off.

He explained to fans on Instagram that he felt like he needed top-tier football to give him a chance of starting for Austria at Euro 2024. He has since started all 13 of Gladbach’s games, in all competitions.

Wober spoke about our start to the season, saying that Leeds are playing a “really cool” style of football under Farke – and thinks if we continue the way we are, promotion is in the bag. His future, in doubt.

“Leeds are doing very well. They play really cool football, it’s fun to watch. If they keep going, everything looks like they’ll be promoted. Then the whole thing isn’t really in my hands,” Wober told Laola1.

The question mark around Wober now is, do we even need him? Pascal Struijk has emerged as a real key player at Elland Road this term – captaining us over the last few weeks. He has become integral.

Until the 2-1 win over Plymouth, he had played every single minute of our first 15 Championship games. As our starting left-footed centre-back, there is no need for Wober with Struijk starring as he is now.

But, Liam Cooper is out of contract at the end of the season and there might be a desire to bring Wober back in case Leeds feel Struijk needs competition – rather, than replacing Cooper with a new signing.
