Max Wober has taken to Instagram to explain why he has decided to leave Leeds United on loan this summer, and has given a very specific reason – stating he feels he needs to play top-tier football to secure a place at Euro 2024.
Wober, 25, only joined Leeds in January but has left the club on loan to join mid-table Bundesliga side Gladbach. It was a bit of a shock, given many felt he would stick around at Elland Road. Robin Koch and co were expected to go.
Not Wober. Reports emerged shortly before he was deemed absent from the loss to Monaco due to ongoing talks that he was open to staying. Koch, Brenden Aaronson, Marc Roca and the two Roma boys can be excused for theirs.
They have all joined clubs in European football and that is a fairly tempting carrot that is hard to ignore. They were all expected to go. So, for Wober to leave – a surprise in itself – to a club not in Europe, is even more of a shock.
Well, the left-footed centre-back has taken to Instagram to explain why he has come to this decision. Why he has chosen to leave us on loan after just 19 appearances for the club. He says it is due to Euro 2024 next summer.

Let’s be honest, a move to play in the top tier of German football – especially for a lad from Austria – will have been tempting. Gladbach is obviously a step up from Leeds, at this moment in time. But does his reasoning make sense?
He must have spoken to Ralf Rangnick, the Austria boss, and sought assurances on what he needed to do to retain his place in the side. Clearly, he has been told he needed to go and play in the top tier – and Gladbach came calling.
