Ryan Edmondson made the surprise move from English football to Australia in the January window, joining Mark Jackson’s Central Coast Mariners – and today, he scored a hat-trick for his new club.
Edmondson, 22, will be remembered for making his debut as a 16-year-old under Paul Heckingbottom back in May 2018. He only ever played twice for our senior side, choosing to go on loan numerous times.
He spent time on loan at Aberdeen, Northampton, Fleetwood and Port Vale before eventually leaving Leeds in the summer of 2022 to join Carlisle United. He scored just seven goals in 52 Carlisle matches.
Indeed, he then left Carlisle last month in controversial circumstances, with manager Paul Simpson the man to confirm his move to Australia. He has teamed up with Mark Jackson, who is in charge at CCM.
Edmondson started three league games in a row and then today, he was rested on the bench in a Cup game – until the last 30 minutes. He scored a quick-fire hat-trick against Cambodian side Phnom Penh.

The first was a neat finish after the ball was cut-back. The second, a solo effort that saw him reach the byline before rounding the goalkeeper. Australia’s A-League Instagram posted a video of his first two.
The hat-trick sees Edmondson, Jackson and Central Coast Mariners reach the semi-final of the Asian Cup semi-finals – where they will take on fellow Aussie side Macarthur. A potential trophy, in the offing.
What is also interesting, is that Edmondson has now joint scored the second-most goals for a club in his career. He had seven at Carlisle, and three at Port Vale – with Mariners the seventh side of his career.
