Leeds United will take a break from Premier League action this week when they take on Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.
Leeds United are looking to get back to winning ways after a confidence-sapping 5-0 battering at the hands of Arsenal on Saturday.
Daniel Farke’s side will enter the Carabao Cup in the second round and have a feisty Yorkshire derby to contend with, as they travel to face Sheffield Wednesday.
Leeds were knocked out of the first round last season in a 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough so, even though they’ve already gone further this year already, they’ll be hoping to pick up a win in the competition.

Wednesday vs Leeds team news
Leeds continue to be without captain Ethan Ampadu due to a foot injury and Ao Tanaka will likely miss the game after suffering some trouble with his knee against Arsenal.
Otherwise, Farke has a lot of options and could make plenty of changes to keep his starting XI fresh ahead of the weekend’s crucial clash with Newcastle United.
Sean Longstaff, Sebastiaan Bornauw, Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Biol and Noah Okafor will all be hoping to make their first starts, though it’s not yet clear if James Justin and Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be involved.
Speaking ahead of the match, Farke was coy on how strong a side he would name.
“I take the cup competition seriously, otherwise, we wouldn’t travel there,” he told BBC Sport.
“We want to progress to the next round, but it’s also fair to say that the priority is definitely Premier League and survival in the Premier League.
“We won’t do anything stupid. We won’t risk a player if there is an injury, doubt, or a doubt in terms of load.”
Referee and officials
In a flashback to last season, Leeds will be playing without VAR in Tuesday’s game. The refereeing team is:
- Referee: Robert Jones
- Assistants: Nick Greenhalgh and Craig Taylor
- Fourth official: Gavin Ward
Prediction
Despite all their many off-field struggles and a decimated squad, Sheffield Wednesday have defied the odds in recent weeks.
They defeated Bolton Wanderers on penalties in the first round and fought back from two goals down to draw with free-spending Wrexham on the weekend.
The Owls will put up a brave fight against Leeds but Farke’s side, whoever he picks, should have more than enough to get past them.
Prediction: Sheffield Wednesday 1-3 Leeds United.
