The January transfer window already looks like it could prove to be hugely important in Leeds United’s promotion push.
Last season, Leeds instead opted for a quiet winter window. Connor Roberts was the only signing brought in, and he went onto start just two league matches.
Ipswich Town, meanwhile, who pipped Leeds to second place, brought in Kieffer Moore and Jeremy Sarmiento amongst others. They both scored crucial goals that proved decisive in the promotion run-in.
This time around, Leeds may not be afforded the luxury of such a quiet month. Injuries have hit hard already this season, and if they continue to do so, Daniel Farke‘s side may not be able to last the pace.
Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev face lengthy spells on the sidelines, while Manor Solomon, Dan James and Max Wober have also already missed a substantial amount of matches.

What Leeds are planning for January transfer window
Leeds are reportedly considering a move for free agent Cheikhou Kouyate as a way to address their midfield issues, though nothing has been decided yet.
Kouyate has played just 69 minutes of club football this year and so clearly needs to prove his fitness before Leeds give the deal the green light.
However, midfield is just one of several positions Leeds are looking a little short right now. In central defence, there is currently no senior cover for Joe Rodon or Pascal Struijk.
Farke was disappointed at Leeds’ failure to sign a number 10 in the summer, and so it would be a surprise if that wasn’t revisited.
Despite starting eight of Leeds’ nine matches up front, Mateo Joseph has just one goal so far. Farke also does not have full belief in either Joel Piroe or Patrick Bamford, meaning a new striker is a possibility.
Speaking exclusively to LeedsUnited.News, transfer expert Graeme Bailey says Leeds could already be looking to sign at least three players when the window reopens.
He said: “Leeds have got the financial muscle to do something in January, the money to make moves. I think they will. They might have to prioritise attack and midfield over the defence but it wouldn’t surprise me if they go into January wanting at least three, maybe four.
“Will they get them? January is not always the easiest, but Leeds will have the finances in place to do some deals, especially loans.”

Leeds’ last five January transfer windows rated
As mentioned, Leeds’ use of the January transfer window in recent years has been very poor. In fact, it is hard to think of a single one as a success.
That simply has to change in the next one, but with a few months until it opens yet, here is a look at who Leeds have signed in each of the last five.
| Season | Signings | Verdict |
| 2023/24 | Connor Roberts | Failure |
| 2022/23 | Max Wober, Georginio Rutter, Weston McKennie | Failure |
| 2021/22 | None | Failure |
| 2020/21 | None | Didn’t matter |
| 2019/20 | Ian Poveda, Jean-Kevin Augustin | Failure |
