Scott Gardner watched his Leeds United U21 side climb to the top of their National League Cup group on Tuesday night after a draw against Halifax Town, followed by a penalty-shootout win.
The 21’s went into Tuesday’s game which saw them take on a side sitting tenth in the National League. A new test for much of Gardner’s young gems who are yet to taste the physicality of senior football.
Gardner named an exciting-looking side that included Scotland U19 internationals Rory Mahady and Sam Chambers. Indeed, Ben Parker described Chambers as “brilliant” after his lung-busting display up top.
Mahady was the subject of praise from boss Gardner, after he pulled off a save in the penalty shootout. Indeed, Leeds took the lead twice, but pegged back by Halifax twice including a 95th-minute equaliser.
Rhys Chadwick scores again, now has 14 goals and assists in 15
Leeds secured a point despite Jack Senior’s late equaliser, but then won another point thanks to a win in the penalty shootout. It sees Leeds sit top of National League Cup group C on eight points from three.
Rhys Chadwick was on fire again, scoring his sixth goal of the season for the 21’s in all competitions. The talented attacking midfielder now has a whopping 14 goals and assists in just 15 appearances for the 21’s.
Six goals, eight assists. With Luca Thomas joining York City on loan and since extending his deal with the fifth-tier outfit, Chadwick has become the talisman alongside Chambers for Gardner’s side, and is thriving.
Chadwick form has got to tempt Daniel Farke in January clash
Leeds have been drawn against League Two side Harrogate Town in the third round of The FA Cup and it will give Daniel Farke a chance to hand some game time to a few fringe players and some youngsters.
Chadwick’s form for Leeds U21 side this season:
| Competition | Games | Goals | Assists |
| Premier League 2 | 9 | 2 | 1 |
| National League Cup | 3 | 2 | 3 |
| Premier League Cup | 3 | 2 | 4 |
The likes of Charlie Crew, Sam Chambers, Josuha Guilavogui, Patrick Bamford, Isaac Schmidt and possibly even Joe Gelhardt may play – if the latter has not left by that point. But, Chadwick will eye a game, too.
Leeds are lacking competition for Brenden Aaronson yet in the 21’s, Chadwick is on fire. His numbers are seriously impressive and at the moment, he is scoring or creating in games more often than he isn’t.
Graham Smyth says he expects Leeds to sign a no.10 in January but, given Chadwick’s form for the 21’s, perhaps Chadwick can save Leeds some cash and give USA talent Aaronson a bit of competition.
