Craig Bellamy’s decision to call up Jayden Lienou for Wales may have surprised some given the Leeds United teenager is yet to make his senior debut.
However, comments from both Bellamy and Dan James suggest the left-back’s rise has been built on genuine progress that has already caught the attention of people watching him closely.
Lienou, 19, only joined Leeds from Manchester City last summer, but his development has been rapid enough to earn a place in the Wales senior squad despite not yet appearing for Daniel Farke’s first team.
That alone highlights the regard in which he is held. International managers are rarely willing to accelerate players without seeing enough evidence that they can cope with a higher level.
Lienou has steadily moved closer to Leeds’ first team
The teenager was a regular for Leeds’ Under-21 side throughout the campaign and recently moved into the senior picture, being named on the bench against both Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton.

While a first-team debut has not arrived yet, those selections demonstrated that Lienou is already operating closer to senior football than many players of his age. Bellamy’s call-up reflects his trajectory.
Dan James says Leeds players know exactly what he can do
The most revealing assessment of Lienou may have come from someone who has trained against him throughout the season. Speaking to BBC Sounds, James explained why he is excited by Lienou.
“He’s been brilliant this season, he’s been training with us a lot, a lot of the first team have been training against him. He’s a great lad, I think it will be great for him this week to experience it.
“But also to have a few familiar faces which helps coming into camp. He thoroughly deserves it, he’s been great since he’s come here, he’s been great at Leeds. He’s definitely one for the future. Jay’s a top player.”
The standout line is James revealing that Leeds’ first-team players have spent plenty of time training against Lienou. That means the praise is not based on reputation or potential alone. It comes from direct experience against senior professionals.

Just as importantly, James believes the call-up is deserved. For a player still waiting for his senior debut, that is a significant endorsement from one of Wales’ most experienced internationals.
Craig Bellamy’s verdict suggests Wales see something special
Bellamy’s own comments make it clear that Wales view Lienou as a player with a genuine opportunity to establish himself at international level.
“I’ve watched him a little bit with Leeds U21s and he’s done very well in the younger setups for Wales, but he’s definitely a player we like. If a space sort of creeps up, what are we wasting time for? Let’s get him in.
“We believe this boy’s got a real great chance. Now, of course, there has to be other progressions to his game to be able to allow him to become a top, top player for Wales.

“But what we’ve seen already in his development and that’s from Leeds, not from us, we see a player with real high potential that could have a huge impact in an area that’s going to be really important for us.”
What stands out is that Bellamy balances excitement with realism. He acknowledges there is further development required, but he also makes it clear Wales see unusually high potential in the Leeds gem.
The easiest reaction to Lienou’s call-up is to focus on the fact he has not yet played senior football. The comments from James and Bellamy suggest a different conclusion. Those closest to his development already believe he has earned this opportunity, which is why his inclusion should not be viewed as a surprise.
