Why Leeds United signed Dominic Calvert-Lewin and not Callum Wilson as West Ham star nets twice

Callum Wilson played a part in shoving Leeds United into the relegation zone on Saturday.

The England international scored twice to secure a 2-2 draw for West Ham against Bournemouth, lifting his side up to 17th as Leeds slipped to 18th.

It sparked outrage amongst fans on social media as to why Leeds failed to sign Callum Wilson given his status as a free agent over the summer, but instead sealed the signing of Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer.

Which position do Leeds United need to strengthen most in January?

Explain why!

Judging by the timings of reports, it seems Leeds did prefer the West Ham hero, but he simply rejected them.

TalkSPORT claim that Leeds were interested in the West Ham No.9 back in the summer, but he chose the Hammers instead.

It was detailed that Will Salthouse – who represents Wilson – has a close relationship with David Sullivan and personally spoke to the West Ham owner about a deal as well.

West Ham eventually announced the signing of the England international on 2nd August, and 13 days later, Leeds announced the arrival of Calvert-Lewin.

Therefore, the timing of those two deals certainly reinforces the fact Wilson – who was initially keen on Leeds – was first choice.

The 33-year-old now has four goals in just four Premier League starts this season.

Daniel Farke already looks foolish just 24 hours after his press conference

Wilson – who is close with Karl Darlow – sending Leeds into the bottom three makes Farke look quite silly.

In his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against Aston Villa on Sunday, Farke boasted that Leeds were yet to spend any time in the relegation zone, using that as a way to say his side have been good this season.

The German said: “I see why there is criticism after the last two games. We were pretty self-critical too, but over the last 11 games, we have not once dropped into the relegation zone.”

However, a 3-0 win for Nottingham Forest at Anfield and the draw for West Ham have now sent Leeds into the drop zone, which should truly embarrass Farke.
