Leeds United are not targeting Lutsharel Geertruida because of reputation alone. The Sunderland loanee has already shown this season that he can handle Premier League football.
His versatility, experience and tactical profile explain exactly why Leeds are now pushing to take advantage of uncertainty around his long-term future. But his loan at Sunderland is set to expire.
£10m for Willy Gnonto is a fair price, right Leeds fans? 👀
The winger has hinted he is leaving, amid links with Freiburg.
Geertruida joined Sunderland on loan from RB Leipzig last summer. Sunderland negotiated a permanent option to buy worth between roughly £18m and £23m, but the clause is unlikely to be activated.
That immediately gives Leeds a realistic route into the conversation. Leeds would not be signing an untested overseas defender, but a player already adapted to Premier League intensity and pace after making 27 top-flight appearances this season.
Geertruida solves multiple Leeds problems at once
Sebastian Vidal reports: “Lutsharel Geertruida is expected to leave the Black Cats this summer. Leeds are pushing to sign the Dutch defender, who is also being tracked by Liverpool, Aston Villa and Tottenham.”
Leeds are not simply looking at a right-back. Geertruida can operate at right-back, centre-back and defensive midfield, which is a major reason top-level clubs have tracked him for years.
He would immediately compete with Jayden Bogle on the right side while also providing cover and competition for Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk centrally. Leeds would effectively be signing two or three positional solutions in one player.
His tactical background under Arne Slot is another major attraction. At Feyenoord, Geertruida regularly stepped into midfield areas during possession phases and became a key part of build-up play.
That ability to progress the ball cleanly is extremely valuable in modern Premier League systems. Leeds need defenders who are comfortable in possession rather than purely reactive players.
His numbers and experience already look Premier League level
Geertruida’s appeal is not based on hype. His career record is already extensive for a 25-year-old defender after making more than 200 appearances for Feyenoord before his move to RB Leipzig.

He won the Eredivisie title, gained regular Champions League and Europa League experience and has also earned 20 senior Netherlands caps. Few defenders potentially available to Leeds this summer can match that combination of pedigree and versatility.
His statistical profile also explains the attraction. Geertruida consistently ranks strongly for progressive passing and defensive duel involvement compared to defenders across major European leagues.
His Sunderland spell has also shown those qualities can translate into English football. Leeds would be targeting a player whose technical level already appears suited to the Premier League.
Why Brenden Aaronson could help Leeds in Geertruida pursuit
Another interesting detail is Geertruida shares the same agency as Brenden Aaronson, according to TransferMarkt. That does not guarantee anything, but it creates an existing relationship channel.

£13m is a bargain!
Leeds have increasingly focused on players with tactical adaptability and high-level coaching backgrounds. Geertruida fits that profile perfectly because of his experience at Feyenoord and Leipzig.
That is very different from signing a developmental Championship defender. Leeds would be pursuing someone already accustomed to pressure environments, elite coaching and European football.
If Sunderland ultimately decline to trigger their purchase clause, Leeds would be justified in viewing Geertruida as one of the smartest defensive opportunities potentially available this summer.
Leeds’ interest in Geertruida is easy to understand once the full picture is examined. Sunderland have already absorbed the adaptation period, the defender’s versatility directly addresses multiple needs.
