There is a completely false transfer rumour going round about Leeds’ ‘magnificent’ player

Graham Smyth has commented on the links between Illan Meslier and Marseille, amid claims that the Leeds United goalkeeper is in talks to sign for Roberto de Zerbi’s side.

Illan Meslier is perhaps one player who potentially has a question mark hanging over him heading into the summer transfer window, with the Frenchman’s development somewhat stagnating after an outstanding start to life at Elland Road.

The 24-year-old was shaky at times last season, particularly in possession. And it seemed that Leeds were open to offers for Meslier as they prepare to try and get out of the Championship at the second attempt.

It appeared that he may get the chance to return across the Channel, with reports claiming that Marseille were in talks to sign Meslier, with Roberto de Zerbi taking over at Stade Velodrome.

Marseille move for Illan Meslier rumours quashed

However, perhaps not all is what it seems when it comes to the links between Meslier and the Ligue 1 side. Speaking on Inside Elland Road, Smyth believes that there is nothing in the links right now.

“The Marseille thing, to me, just isn’t real,” he said. “Somebody is pumping that out, but Leeds aren’t aware of the interest, which means that the interest isn’t real, because there hasn’t even been a tentative enquiry, so that’s a non-starter right now.”

Leeds star has point to prove next season – should he stay

Meslier had been in an interesting position heading into this summer, as you would imagine that most Leeds fans would have happily accepted a decent offer for the goalkeeper – particularly if it would have helped ensure that Archie Gray remained at the club.

However, Meslier is clearly talented, producing some ‘magnificent’ saves last season, most notably, against the likes of Sunderland and Leicester City. And he has previously shown that he can shine in the Premier League, so it could be difficult for Leeds to land an upgrade.

Of course, there is still a long way to go in the window, so there is plenty of time for a club to make a move for Meslier – and Leeds may perhaps remain open to the prospect of his sale. But it seems that a move to Marseille is not one to expect as things stand.
